We are Chas and Josie, the owners of Les Vaux. Some years ago, we decided on a change of direction in our lives and just one month after our first ever visit to France (a fishing holiday, of course!) we found Les Vaux, a rural, tranquil and very peaceful location set in the superb countryside of the Brittany / Mayenne border. Since 2002 we have established what we believe is a unique carp angler’s escape to the country.
We decided right from the start to specialise in family holidays, with the emphasis on the carp angler, but somewhere that anglers’ families would also want to come and it was the building right beside the lake that we could see as the perfect family accommodation. In its time, it had had many functions, including animal byre and hay loft, and was, when we bought the lake, a garage and storage shed. It was gutted and transformed into the comfortable 3-bedroomed gîte that sleeps 10 that you see today. No cabin fever here! The whole family can enjoy the carp angler’s adventure from the luxury of a quiet, rural French retreat.
Want to get out and about? Brilliant for children and adults alike is Aquatis, a superb, all-weather water park a 10-minute drive away in Fougères. But this is just one of the many attractions to be found in the surrounding regions of Brittany, Normandy and Mayenne – take a look at our Useful Links section. Weekly street markets are held in many local towns (more information can be found in the gîte), but if you would like something less busy, local traffic is very light and the area ideal for cycling and walking.
Many of our guests return time and time again, which is an absolute delight to us – and to Buddy, the dog, too!
The lake and gite will be available from 2pm on the day of arrival and must be vacated no later than 10am on the day of departure. This is to allow us enough time to prepare the gite and around the lake for the following guests. You are welcome to arrive earlier than 2pm if you wish, but please let us know beforehand. We work as quickly as possible, but we hope that you will understand that early arrivals will have to spend a short time waiting until the venue is ready
The disabled angler has full access throughout the ground floor of the gite. Entrance is through a double door which is 945mm wide and internal doorways are 860mm into the ground floor WC/shower room and 810mm into the living room. A single bed for the disabled angler with height raisers, plus another bed for a companion if required, can be brought down to the ground floor living room where there is still plenty of room for socialising
The local village boulangerie is a short walk away where you can buy fresh baked bread and pastries and a few basic provisions such as milk. It is closed one day per week, usually Wednesday. Within the local garage there is a tabac for cigarettes and a pizza van arrives in the village of Le Loroux on the main road each Thursday evening. Fougères is a 10 minute drive away where there are several supermarkets, a variety of shops, a selection of eateries and a 1000 year old castle to explore
